A Guardian of Heritage - Saskia Edwards

Saskia Edawards I am a Civil Servant

As the Programme Manager at the Cayman Brac Heritage House, Saskia Edwards embodies the spirit of the Cayman Islands Civil Service through her dedication to preserving and promoting Caymanian heritage and culture. Her experiences, insights, and aspirations reflect the importance of community, creativity, and heritage within our Service.

Passion and Creativity

Saskia's passion for her work shines through as she describes the Heritage House as a living testament to Caymanian heritage and culture. Her role encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities that allow her to think beyond the physical confines of the Heritage House. "The level of creativity and the possibilities to explore are exciting and vast," she notes.

Through innovative educational programmes, she ignites curiosity and instils pride in all things Caymanian among visitors and residents alike. The opportunity to engage with the local community in meaningful ways is truly fulfilling for this young, articulate and passionate ‘Bracka’.

One of the most rewarding aspects of her role is the ability to create immersive experiences. Whether it’s organising traditional craft workshops or hosting cultural storytelling sessions, each initiative aims to connect people to their roots. "Seeing the joy on people's faces when they discover something new about their heritage is priceless," she says, reiterating the profound impact of cultural engagement.

A Journey to Preserve Heritage

With 14 years in the Department of District Administration, Saskia has witnessed the evolution of the Heritage House and its role in the community. "It's incredible to see how far we've come and the impact we've made," she says with pride. From a simple repository of artefacts to a vibrant hub for cultural exchange, the Heritage House has become a cornerstone of Cayman Brac's tourism product.

Story-telling and Community

Saskia emphasises that collaboration is key; many initiatives at the Heritage House are made possible through partnerships with various organisations and institutions. "We are fortunate to have a network of supportive partners who share our vision," she reflects. These collaborations not only enhance the programmes offered but also foster a sense of unity within the Cayman Brac community and across the wider Cayman Islands.

A profound appreciation for Caymanian history and hospitality underpins each task, driving her commitment to enriching the community's cultural landscape. "Every interaction is an opportunity to share our story and enrich someone else's understanding of our heritage," she notes. This dedication to storytelling is what makes her role unique and essential in a world where cultural narratives, so important to a society’s success, are often overlooked.

Joint Keepers of Heritage

Saskia finds joy in one-on-one interactions, particularly with seniors who hold rich stories of our heritage. "They have so much wisdom to share," she reflects, emphasising the importance of listening to the voices of those who came before us.

Her aspiration to expand the Heritage House is not just about physical space; it’s also about creating more opportunities for young civil servants in the field of culture and heritage. "I envision a place where young people can thrive and learn, while contributing to, and protecting, our cultural narrative," she states. Mentorship opportunities will be integral to this vision, ensuring that the next generation is equipped with the knowledge and skills to carry on the legacy.

Her commitment to collaboration extends beyond Cayman Brac, as she sees immense potential for partnerships with Grand Cayman and Little Cayman. "There's so much we can learn from each other," she says, highlighting the importance of unity in preserving Caymanian culture. With the support of District Commissioner Mark Tibbets, Saskia is poised to make a lasting impact on the preservation and celebration of Caymanian culture.

Inspiring Aspiring Civil Servants

For those considering a civil service career, Saskia offers invaluable advice: "Always try to show up as your best self and take pride in your performance." She encourages embracing networking, training, and learning opportunities to cultivate a growth mindset. Her favourite quote resonates deeply: "It isn't about eliminating fear but rather about finding courage."

In addition to personal growth, she emphasises the importance of mentorship. "Seek out mentors who can guide you and support you during challenging times," she advises.

The Future of Caymanian Heritage

Looking ahead, Saskia is excited about the possibilities for the Heritage House and the broader community. With plans to introduce new programmes that focus on digital storytelling and interactive exhibits, she aims to engage a wider audience, especially younger generations. "We need to meet people where they are, and that means embracing technology while staying true to our roots," she explains.

As she continues her journey in the Civil Service, Saskia remains committed to her role as a guardian of our heritage. "We all have a responsibility to protect and promote our heritage," she concludes.

Through her dedication and vision, coupled with her endearing smile and heartfelt personality, Saskia exemplifies the values of the Civil Service, and what it means to be world-class!
