Temporary Increase to Duty-Free Allowance

Cabinet has approved an Order under Schedule 2 of the Customs Tariff Act (2023 Revision) authorizing a temporary increase to the duty-free allowance for Cayman residents returning by air during the upcoming holiday season.

From 29 November 2025 through to 11 January 2026, returning residents may bring in personal and household goods, valued up to CI$1,000 duty-free, an increase of CI$500 from the standard allowance.

The carefully considered temporary measure is intended to provide meaningful financial relief for families during a time when many residents traditionally shop for holiday celebrations. While also supporting efficient and smooth airport operations at the Owen Roberts International Airport and Charles Kirkconnell International Airport, during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Additionally, the temporary adjustment will simplify the passenger declaration process.

However, this Order does not apply to merchandise or goods intended for resale.

Who the allowance applies to:

·       Residents of the Cayman Islands who are returning by air during the designated period.

·       This allowance is strictly limited to personal and household goods and does not extend to merchandise or items intended for resale.

How it works:

·       Goods up to CI$1,000 may be admitted as duty-free at the Officer’s discretion.

·       Goods exceeding CI$1,000 must be declared and will incur duty on the excess.

·       Travelers should retain receipts and declare items accurately; CBC officers may verify information where necessary.

Honourable Nickolas DaCosta, JP, MP, Minister for District Administration and Home Affairs, said the initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to supporting Caymanian families, while maintaining strong border operations. “As a Government, we want to ease some of the pressure families feel during the holidays. By temporarily increasing the duty-free allowance, residents will have a little more flexibility to prepare and celebrate the season”, he said. “This change will also help keep airport processing smooth and efficient during our busiest weeks. It’s a simple, people-focused step that supports families while ensuring our border operations continue to run fairly and effectively for everyone”.

Residents are reminded that items exceeding the CI$1,000 allowance must be declared on the Customs & Border Control (CBC) Declaration Form. CBC Officers may verify declarations as part of their standard procedures. Items intended for resale remain subject to full duty.

This temporary increase in allowance ends on 11 January 2026, after which the standard CI$500 duty-free allowance will resume.
