Cayman Islands National Archive

What We Do

The Cayman Islands National Archive is the lead regulatory agency for records and information management (RIM). As per the National Archive and Public Records Act (2015 Revision), CINA’s has a responsibility to provide and implement a sound RIM infrastructure for the CIG, to ensure consistency in the approach to managing government’s information assets.

The National Archive also preserves the nation’s history by acquiring and providing access to documentation in various media, e.g. photographs, textual documents, publications, maps, audio and film recordings, etc. The acquisition and preservation of government records (in all formats) identified as archival, in addition to other records created and held within the Islands or overseas, is absolutely essential in order to document our Islands’ history and safeguard access for current and future generations.

Organisations & Functions

The National Archive provides two sets of services: one to the public and one to the Government. For members of the public, the Archive acquires, preserves and gives access to the historical heritage of the Cayman Islands; for government departments, it supports a modern records and information management service ensuring that official records are properly managed from the moment of their creation until they are transferred into the Historical Collections or disposed. The two services are closely linked: today’s records are tomorrow’s archives. Only with sound records management and meticulous preservation can records be carefully maintained for future generations.

The work focuses on two major outcomes:
  • To enable good recordkeeping practices across the Cayman Islands Public Sector, in support of Government accountability and efficiency; and
  • To manage, preserve and provide access to the documentary heritage of the Cayman Islands through its Historical Collections.
